How to Build a DIY Golf Net in 5 Easy Steps

How to Build a DIY Golf Net in 5 Easy Steps

If you’re an avid golfer and don’t have the room or the budget for a golf practice cage, building a DIY golf net is a great way to improve your game in the comfort of your own backyard.

It doesn’t require a lot of materials or tools and can be built in just 5 simple steps.

In this blog post, we’ll provide detailed instructions on how to build a durable and affordable golf net using golf netting material and PVC pipe.

So if you’re ready to take your golf practice to the next level, let’s get started!

1) Step One: Choose the Right Location

Finding the right location to build your DIY golf net is essential for ensuring that you can practice in a safe and effective manner.

When looking for a suitable spot, try to find a place with plenty of open space and far away from any buildings or other structures.

Additionally, if possible, select a spot with a flat surface and plenty of sun exposure – this will make it easier to maintain the turf and give you plenty of natural light during your practice session.

Also, consider how much time you’ll have available to set up and take down the net each day.

If you only have a limited 20-minute window of spare time, then you’ll want to choose a spot that’s close to the house or garage.

This way, you won’t need to waste valuable time carrying the components to and from the designated practice area.

Finally, don’t forget to keep an eye out for any potential hazards that could be in the vicinity – such as trees, power lines or overhanging branches.

2) Step Two: Assemble Your Materials

Once you have decided on the dimensions of your golf net, it's time to assemble your materials. Start by purchasing the right amount of golf netting material, PVC pipe/Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT), and zip ties to use as fasteners.

Golf netting can be purchased in several different sizes depending on the size of your golf net.

I have attached my purchase list for your reference,

  • 4 pieces of Standard PVC pipe
  • 2 elbow connectors (PVC pipe Fitting )
  • 2 T-shaped connectors (PVC pipe Fitting)
  • 100 Count Black 8″ Cable Ties (Optional)
  • 10' by 10' golf netting (Our own products, no need to buy:)

The size of the PVC pipe should correspond with the size of the netting.
(Recommended External diameter = 1 5/8", get these at the plumbing section of a hardware store and the grand total of all the PVC stuff is 50 dollars, pretty cheap.)

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) is an alternative choice for this project because it is strong enough to hold up the golf net.
(3/4” or 1” EMT, available at any home improvement store)

Zip ties can be used to secure the netting to the frame.

It's important to buy all of these materials in the correct sizes and quantities before beginning your project. Make sure to double-check all of your measurements so that everything fits together properly. Once you have all of your materials, it's time to start building your DIY golf net!

3) Step Three: Cut the PVC Pipe

Now that you’ve gathered your supplies, it’s time to start building your golf net. The first step is to cut the PVC pipe into the appropriate pieces.

Note: Don't feel like you have to use the exact dimensions or materials. You can make it really any size you want.

Have fun!

You will need three different lengths of pipe in order to create the frame for your net.
The longest pieces should be 36 inches in length and should be used as vertical supports.
The next pieces should be cut to 24 inches and will be used as horizontal crossbeams.
Finally, you will need to cut two pieces of pipe at 12 inches each and use them as the lower horizontal support.

To ensure accuracy and avoid any mishaps while cutting the PVC pipe, use a power saw with a clamped-down miter box to guide the blade. Be sure to wear protective eyewear and gloves when cutting the PVC pipe to avoid any injuries.

Once you have all of your pieces cut, it’s time to start constructing the frame for your golf net.

4) Step Four: Assemble the Frame

Now it’s time to put together your DIY golf net frame! You will need four pieces of PVC pipe cut to size, plus a length of netting material.

Start by laying the netting material out flat and attaching the first two pieces of PVC pipe across each end.

Then, attach the remaining two pieces of PVC pipe in the center of the frame, making sure that all four pieces are securely connected. Once all four pieces are connected, you should have a square frame that measures approximately 6 feet wide and 8 feet high.

Congratulations – you’ve just built your own DIY golf net!

5) Step Five: Hang the Netting

Now that you’ve constructed the frame for your golf net, it’s time to hang the netting!

Here are the steps you need to follow to get the job done:
1. Start by placing the netting over the top of the frame and using the zip ties to secure it. Don't stretch the net too tight.
2. Then, start at the top of the frame and work your way down. Wrap the netting around the frame and use cable ties to secure it every 4-6 inches.
3. Once you’ve gone all the way around the frame. Leave a couple of feet of net to drag on the ground to help with cushioning shots. Keep it slack. When the ball does hit, the net has enough room to move to the back.
4. Finally, make sure the netting is secure and double-check that all of the zip ties are tight.

And that’s it! Your DIY golf net is now ready to use. With a few supplies and some basic tools, you’ve created a safe, effective way to practice your golf game at home.

6) Step Six: Add the Border (optional)

Now that you have your PVC pipe frame and golf netting secured in place, it’s time to add the border. This step is important as it will help contain wayward shots and will also make your DIY golf net look more professional.

You’ll need to measure and cut four equal lengths of rope for the border. Make sure the rope you use is UV resistant and durable enough to withstand the elements.

Once you have your four pieces of rope, tie them securely around the edges of your frame using sturdy knots. You may need to adjust the knots a few times in order to get them tight and even.

Once the border is in place, your DIY golf net is ready for use! With some basic materials, a little bit of elbow grease, and these easy steps, you can now practice your golf game with your very own homemade golf net. Enjoy!

7) Step Seven: Fill the Base (optional)

The further step in building your DIY golf net is to fill the base.

You will need some concrete mix and a bucket for this part. Begin by pouring some concrete mix into the bucket. Add enough water to make a paste that is easy to work with.

Using a trowel, start filling the base of the golf net with the concrete mixture. Make sure you are pressing the mixture down firmly as you go so that it will create a strong foundation. Once the base is filled, let it sit overnight to dry.

8) Step Eight: Add the Weight (optional)

Unlike the method in step seven, in step eight, you’ll need to add some weight to the netting. This will help keep the net in place, even if you accidentally hit it with your club.

The easiest way to add weight is by filling an old bag or backpack with sand, rocks, or whatever heavy material you have on hand. Then, tie the bag onto the bottom of the net. This will provide enough weight to keep it from blowing away or shifting around.

You can also buy weighted discs or bags specifically designed for golf nets. These are usually made of plastic and filled with sand, which makes them easy to install. Simply attach them to the bottom of your net using bungee cords or zip ties.

Whichever method you choose, make sure the bag or weight you use is securely fastened and won’t be easily dislodged by a stray golf ball. That way, your golf net will remain firmly in place no matter what kind of shots you take!

9) Step Nine: Set Up the Targets

Setting up the targets is the final step in your DIY golf net building journey! It’s easy to do with a few simple materials and a bit of know-how.

You’ll need some sort of target to set up around your DIY golf net. You can use whatever you like, such as plastic cups or small cones.

Once you have your targets, set them up around the perimeter of your golf net. Make sure they are placed at different heights and distances, so that you can practice your accuracy.

To add more challenge, you can also place targets in the center of the golf net. This will require more precise shots and can help improve your overall golf game.

For an extra layer of challenge, you can also attach a flag to the top of each target. This will make it even harder to hit the target, as the flag will move in the wind.

Once you have all your targets set up, you can start practicing! With your own DIY golf net, you’ll be able to work on improving your aim and accuracy from the comfort of your own home. Good luck!

10) Step Ten: Practice, Practice, Practice!

Now that you have your DIY golf net all set up and ready to go, it's time to get out there and start practicing!

After all, practice is the key to becoming a better golfer. And with the convenience of having your own golf net in the comfort of your own home, there's no excuse not to practice regularly.

You can spend some time working on your drives and long game by hitting balls into the net from different distances, or you can use it for short game practice too. There are many ways to use your golf net and hone your skills as a golfer. And with regular practice and dedication, you'll soon see improvements in your game.

Finally, don't forget to have fun with it! You can play around with different drills or challenge yourself with creative shots.

Set up some makeshift obstacles or even create a miniature golf course. With your DIY golf net, the possibilities are endless.

So go out there and have some fun while getting better at the same time.
